Pride Photo is delighted to invite you to a workshop and open studio with DeLovie Kwagala, also known as Papa De. The event is part of the Pride Photo Residency, hosted at the FUTURES Photography Hub, where Papa De is developing and presenting their project ME(MORIES).
DeLovie Kwagala is the first openly non-binary queer photographer from Uganda. An award-winning visual artist and filmmaker, their work takes a defiant stance against the colonial gaze and seeks to dismantle stereotypes surrounding beauty, gender identity, and the fetishisation or victimisation of Black and queer bodies.
Through self-taught, multidisciplinary visual storytelling, Papa De documents and archives the lives of African queer youth, exploring identity, belonging, migration, displacement and climate justice.
About ME(MORIES)
ME(MORIES) revisits pre-colonial history through a family archive dating back to the 1970s. At the centre of the project is the Gomesi—the iconic traditional dress worn by Ugandan women from the Buganda Kingdom and beyond. The project traces the garment’s evolution into a defining symbol of honourable womanhood.

Workshop
This hands-on workshop explores collage and graphic intervention as tools for reimagining family archives and personal memories in a positive and meaningful way.
Drawing on Papa De’s artistic practice and recent body of work, participants will use accessible collage techniques to revisit photographs and transform them into new visual narratives. The workshop invites reflection on moments of connection, belonging and community.
What to bring
- Printed family photographs in A4 format that you are comfortable altering
- Additional printed images, magazines or other ephemera you would like to incorporate (optional)
All other materials will be provided.
