Chantal Regnault

Biography

Chantal Regnault is a French documentary photographer who was based in New York from the 1970s to the 1990s. Initially trained in French literature, she later studied photography at the International Center for Photography and the School of Visual Arts, New York.

Her work documents queer communities in New York during a pivotal period, including Pride marches, AIDS activism, and the Ballroom scene of the late 1980s and early 1990s, where she photographed legendary houses, founding mothers, and key figures of the culture. Regnault is the author of Voguing and the House Ballroom Scene of New York City 1989–92 (Soul Jazz Books, 2011), and co-directed the award-winning documentary Deported (2012).
