Presented in collaboration with Melkweg Expo
Pride Photo partnered with Melkweg Expo to present Legacies of Identity: Queer Histories of Third Genders, a photography exhibition that opened in July 2025 in Amsterdam.
The exhibition explored longstanding traditions of gender diversity within LGBTQIA+ communities worldwide. It highlighted identities in which third and trans genders are visible, respected, and culturally integrated—from the Muxes in Mexico to the Waria in Indonesia. These identities are deeply rooted in local histories and challenge dominant narratives of gender as binary or fixed.
The works of Nelson Morales, Jairo Nicolás Bernal, Sumi Anjuman, Vaughan Larsen, Supranav Dash, JeanPaul Paula, Yoppy Pieter, and Su Cassiano explore how colonialism, class structures, and religious institutions have historically marginalized and oppressed communities.
Legacies of Identity combined visual storytelling with cultural history, inviting audiences to reflect on the diversity of gender expression across time and place.
