Rebels at Heart

Rebels at Heart

Rebels at Heart is a playful response to the stereotyping of certain people into boxes, labels and categories that lack nuance, and eventually end up denying them their full, complex humanity.

Magsi: “So, if women and girls wear hijab, they are perceived in a particular light within their own communities, with unrealistic, patriarchal and sexist expectations of modesty, piety and decorum, while also being othered and discriminated against by fellow humans outside of their communities. Sometimes this results in a double edged sword. Damned if you do. Damned if you don’t.

So, where do we go from here? We rebel, subvert, transgress and confuse. We escape the very boxes we are being placed into by society, while igniting people to look beyond the polar categories of “oppressed or liberated” “good and bad” “right and wrong” to find the smoky, hazy but incredibly important grey areas in between. It is there, with our rebellious, beating hearts, that we also find truth, love and humanity.
