In LOVE CAN SAVE US the artist Jairo Nicolas Bernal presents us with a personal photograph from his archive, one which he now reflects on as his first ever photographic intervention. In the image, Jairo’s mother stands in the courtyard of their family home in Ipiales, Narińo, Colombia. Beside her is a part of the image that is cutout – an intervention – in which Bernal had chosen to remove himself from the photograph in an attempt to disappear.
As a child, Bernal experienced severe bullying for not conforming to binary gender expressions, and identifying as queer. This form of abuse affected his emotional and psychological well-being and led him to develop suicidal ideations at a very young age. Through dialogue, unconditional love and support from his mother, he is on a journey of self-affirmation. By adding his fingerprint – he confirms his existence as a young adult – a life that was long thought impossible.
