Faceless Portraits
Door het ontbreken van wettelijke bescherming en een groot maatschappelijke taboe, ervaren LHBT personen in China vaak uitsluiting en discriminatie. Deze serie toont populaire Chinese beroemdheden, met een grote aanhang op sociale media. Guangbo Li presenteert deze mensen alleen met hun lichaam.

Deze serie toont populaire Chinese beroemdheden, met een grote aanhang op sociale media. Guangbo Li presenteert deze mensen alleen met hun lichaam. Alleen fotograaf en geportretteerde weten wie de persoon op de foto is. Het zijn LHBTQIA+ personen, die deze identiteit verborgen houden voor het publiek. Uit de kast komen zou grote gevolgen hebben voor hun populariteit en marktwaarde. Enerzijds maken de portretten ons bewust van onze afhankelijkheid van “gezichten” rond identiteit. Anderzijds laat Guangbo Li de deelnemers zich losmaken van hun sociale identiteit en terugkeren naar hun echte, maar verborgen identiteit.
Over de fotograaf
Guangbo Li werd geboren in Jiangjin, Chongqing, China in 1992. Hij houdt zich voornamelijk bezig met kunstcreatie, kunstprojecten en tentoonstelling planning en ander gerelateerd werk. Fotografie is Guangbo Li’s belangrijkste creatieve medium, terwijl gedrag en installatie de secundaire creatieve media zijn. Zijn kunstprojecten onderzoeken de subtiele relatie tussen tijd en “mensen”, “de maatschappij” en “zichzelf”.
Zijn belangrijkste werk is “Emotion Record Museum”, een reeks van portret fotografische projecten en tentoonstellingen die een dialoog aangaan met verschillende mensen. Het hele project begon in 2014 en is nog steeds gaande, met tot nu toe 400.000 deelnemende mensen.
In 2016 won hij de New Talent Award of Chinese Photography Art Fund in China Pingyao International Photography Festival (PIP). In 2017 won hij de Outstanding Curator Award van China Pingyao International Photography Festival (PIP). In datzelfde jaar werd hij geselecteerd en genomineerd in het Chinese Contemporary Art Document.
Sinds 2014 heeft Guangbo Li veel commerciële en grootschalige kunsttentoonstellingen in China georganiseerd. Hij initieerde verschillende fotografie projecten voor kunstenaars en kinderen op het platteland. Hij heeft een goede samenwerking met grote welzijnsorganisaties en merken. Documentaires en onafhankelijke films onder zijn supervisie zijn uitgenodigd om deel te nemen aan belangrijke kunstfestivals en filmfestivals en hebben prijzen gewonnen.
Due to the lack of legal protection and a large social taboo, LGBT people in China often experience exclusion and discrimination. This series shows popular Chinese celebrities, with a high number of followers on social media. Guangbo Li presents these people only with their bodies. Only the photographer and the person being portrayed know who the person on the photo is. These are LGBTQIA+ persons, who keep their identity hidden from the public. Coming out of the closet would have big consequences for their popularity and market value.
On the one hand, the portraits make us aware of our dependence on ‘faces’ for identity. On the other hand, Guangbo Li lets the participants detach themselves from their social identity and return to their real, but hidden identity.
About the photographer
Guangbo Li was born in Jiangjin, Chongqing, China in 1992. Mainly engaged in art creation, art projects and exhibition planning and other related work.
Photography is Guangbo Li’s main creative medium, while behavior and installation are the secondary creative media. Since 2014, Guangbo Li has planned many commercial and large-scale art exhibitions in China. Initiated several art resident and rural children welfare photography training projects. He has good cooperation with major public welfare organizations and brands. Documentaries and independent films supervised by him have been invited to participate in important art festivals and film festivals and won awards.
