In South Africa, men kill 3 women a day in the femicide crisis. South African masculinities are a danger to the society, to women, to other men and to the environment. The image was taken with queer people who pass as men, in an exploration of masculinity, Africanness and the construction and deconstruction of identity, of belonging, of blackness, of queerness, and of masculinity.
Who are the people in the image, what is their relation to each other and to you?The people in the image self-identifying queer people who all pass as men in their communities. The person in the foreground is a long-time friend and partner, KNeo Mokgopa, with whom I’ve been thinking and exploring the ideas communicated in the image with for awhile now. The others are people we chose to create the image with, who graciously agreed to help tell this story.
