Hideko Kataoka is the director of photography at Newsweekjapan.jp, since 2001. She oversees and directs photography for the printed and digital editions of the magazine, as well as its special issues. She joined the magazine as a photographer in 1991, covering national news, social issues and portraiture of world business and cultural leaders.

Kataoka is also a lecturer in Photojournalism and documentary photography at Tokyo Polytechnic University. In 2004, she launched a Picture Power section in the magazine, capturing underreported topics from around the world, culminating in a photo book Ten Years of Picture Power, in 2014.

She has served as a Juror in many prestigious photo competitions including World Press Photo and FotoFest.
