Security, attention and love is what gives children a home. When they look at their parents they see age, relationship, or perhaps sexuality. Forming a family is accepted without doubt in all cultures, but not necessarily if you are gay. While the drafting of civil marriage for same-sex couples paved the way to establishing officially recognised families, it also invited society to sometimes critically examine less common family forms.
The series Daddy Cool shows the diversity of gay fathers in the Netherlands. I’ve been following these fathers and their children well over a year ago. Daddy Cool is at first glance a portrait series from the perspective of the child, the special character of the series only unfolds when the family setting becomes known.
